Trump threatens BRICS with 100% tariffs over dollar replacement efforts
US President-elect Donald Trump continues to shake up the markets with his bold moves. This time, the eccentric billionaire is firmly backing the American dollar. Trump has once again vowed to use tariffs as a weapon to maintain the greenback's dominance as the world's reserve and trade currency.
According to the Republican, his incoming administration will not stand by passively as the BRICS nations pursue de-dollarization. In light of this, Trump has urged BRICS countries, which are developing plans for a new currency and payment system, to halt these initiatives. If they do not comply, Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on goods imported into the United States from the bloc's countries. "We require a commitment from these countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency nor back any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar, " the president-elect said.
Trump's statement has sparked widespread speculation, leaving analysts uncertain about the next steps from the incoming White House administration. Current speculation includes the potential use of Bitcoin and the possible lifting of sanctions against Russia, which could pave the way for resumed dollar-based transactions.
Notably, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated in November that Russia was not abandoning the greenback. The country is "simply refusing to use the dollar as a settlement tool," the Russian leader noted.
