The earthquake centered at a depth of 9 kilometers in the Macerata province. Ground vibrations caused significant damage in most places of the province.

Residents of the regions affected by the earthquake were transferred to safe areas. Some of them were located in the Red Cross office, the rest were provided with shelters.
Many residents of the affected regions decided to wait through the earthquake in their vehicles. They left their houses and were sitting in cars.
According to the Italian authorities, many of the buildings in the Macerata province became completely uninhabitable after the earthquake. In connection with that, special stations were organized to accommodate those who feared to stay in their houses or lost their homes.
