10 place – Karnali Highway, Nepal
Almost all the routes running through the Himalayas are called "death roads": from a bird's eye view, they seem like a wandering serpentine which, firstly, descends to the very bottom of the gorge, then rises almost to the snowy peaks.
According to a study conducted by specialists in 2011, landslides and rock falls occur regularly on most part of the 250 km Karnali highway located in Nepal, and the lack of fences further increases the number of victims.
Despite the fact that the road is a very narrow strip of land, cut down in the rock, hundreds of cars and even regular buses run daily along the Karnali highway. The deadly route is the only way to reach many localities.
9 place – Skippers Canyon Road, New Zealand
The filming of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" took place here, in the Canyon of Captains. It is prohibited to move here on leased cars, so you will not get car insurance.
To drive on a local road in your car, you need to get a special permit, and to stay alive - to have a colossal endurance and maximum concentration.
The "road of death", the length of which is just over 25 km, lies in the mountains of Orum, near Queenstown, and is known for a huge number of steep slopes.
8 place – Sichuan-Tibet Highway, China
Regular landslides and avalanches in the Tibetan mountains influence the Sichuan-Tibet highway as well. Although the length of the road is only 2,142 km, the death rate is one of the highest in the world.
Sichuan-Tibet begins from Chengdu, the administrative center of Sichuan Province, and ends in Lhasa, crossing more than a dozen mountains, the average height of which is 4,000-5,000 m.
7 place – Karakoram Highway, China and Pakistan
The famous Karakoram Highway, passing through the territory of several states, has become a worthy example of courage and fortitude of people who had been building the highest mountain track in the world for 20 years.
A mortally dangerous path runs through an unusually picturesque region, the Karakoram mountain system, which is only slightly inferior to the Himalayan mountain range. Now, like 30 years ago, people still die here, but it was this wonderful land that became the scene of the "The Game of Thrones" famous series.
6 place – Kabul-Jalalabad Highway, Afghanistan
All 60 km of the Kabul-Jalalabad highway represent a continuous series of sharp turns and cliffs.
However, the terrible accidents on this road happen not only due to the characteristics of the landscape but also because of the drivers' disdain for the driving rules.
If we take into account the fact that blasts periodically occur here, the road Kabul-Jalalabad is rightly considered the most dangerous in Afghanistan and one of the most deadly in the world.
5 place – Guoliang Tunnel, China
The famous Guoliang Tunnel is a national landmark of China, largely thanks to its exceptional beauty. However, it was built solely to link the village of the same name to the surrounding world.
Only then, when many natural windows overlooking the valley in the Taihang Mountain were appreciated not only by the locals but also by the guests of China, the Guoliang Tunnel became a popular tourist attraction.
4 place – Trollstigen, Norway
The "road of the trolls", rising along the mountain slope with 11 with steep and sharp turns, resembles a ladder, each of which opens a stunning view of steep cliffs, waterfalls, deep fjords and green valleys of western Norway.
It is believed that during the ascent to a steep rock you can meet trolls, mountain spirits, born from rocks and turned in stone by the sun. These ugly creatures with a big nose are the national symbol of Norway.
3 place – Commonwealth Avenue, the Philippines
The 18-lane Commonwealth Avenue did not save Manila from many kilometers of traffic jams, only those who can skillfully maneuver between cars can get out of them.
During rush hours, the road turns into a sea of cars, and fatal accidents happen here every day.
2 place – Zoji La Pass, India
The winding road of Zoji La Pass in the late 40s of the 20th century became a place of battle between the Hindus and the Pakistanis. For the first time in the world, the use of armored vehicles occurred at an altitude of about 4,700 m.
The pass, which does not exceed 11 km in length, plays an important role in traveling from Kashmir to Ladakh, so local authorities regularly clear the road from snow in order to ensure safe passage through the most difficult sections of the route.
1 place – North Yungas Road, Bolivia
The history of North Yungas Road knew many fatal accidents, but the disaster that occurred on July 24, 1983, was the biggest of them. The bus fell into the abyss and, as a result, more than 100 people died.
If you look down the cliff, you can see a lot of remains of cars, trucks, buses, for which a trip along the Yungas Road became the last one.
Now, instead of this deadly route, a spacious and safe road was constructed, bypassing the mountain ranges, but there are still a lot of brave ones who decided to tickle their nerves and to experience the thrill.
